I arrived at Puddingstone Lake on an April evening 2016 about 6:00 pm. After getting out the SUV and grabbing my gear I ran into a couple of guys doing the same thing after exchanging a few words they decided to follow me to a spot I haven’t fished yet this year. I t was a little windy but the spot I decided to start at was out the wind.
With three of us trying to fish in this small area it was a little tight but we made the best of it. After a few cast, I saw a spot that looked fishy but it was difficult to get a lure to it. It required a backhand cast that needed a skip or two to get into the spot under some low hanging limbs.
I was throwing a 6-inch stick bait very similar to the famous Senko stick bait, I rigged it fly-lined Tex-exposed with a 5/0 wide gap Gamakatsu hook. The stick bait I made myself and it was infused with scent and salt. The color was a unique hue of Green Pumpkin and gold and black flake. These stick baits have been very good to me this year I have only been making them for a couple of months in a variety of colors, but they have already produced several bass.
It took me several casts to get my bait to the right spot but after several attempts, the effort paid off with a tremendous bite and a very good fight on 8-pound test Sniper Sunline in a tight spot with trees and limbs everywhere. The gentleman I was fishing with was just as excited as I was. I quickly weight the bass, took a few photo’s and released her she weighed in at a little over 3 pounds.
